6:52 p.m. - 2008-01-11 Lima vs Butter Anyone out there a botanist? I need an answer about beans. In some parts of the country this particular bean is called a lima bean. In the South we know it as a butter bean. Said beans come in colors and sizes, small, med and large (no xxx tho) and colors of white, green and purple. It has always been the tiny green butter bean for me. Fixed with plenty of salt and some type of tasty "grease" like the leftovers from frying a nice pan of bacon. And mixed with creamed corn = divine. The basis for this ramble comes from an usual happening at a recent Christmas party. The significant-other and I attended 6 festivites closing out 2007. 5 of these get-togethers had the normal-fare, strange little bits of things with no name and less taste. But one party stood out among the rest. This party had butter beans. When everyone else was going back for dessert, I went back for butter beans. This was such a wonderful surprise! I had forgotten how much I love this adorable little bean. And what a shock to find a pot-full on the stove complete with a big piece of ham right in the middle - ahh - the aroma of ham and beans. Such good simple food - a fine food for Christmas. Strong and steady, often overlooked. Simply the best dessert of the Season :)
